Hot Water Runs Out Fast? Here's Why (and It's Usually Not the Size)

Most people assume they need a bigger tank. Usually they don't — a 50-gallon heater that used to handle three showers and now barely handles one has a specific, fixable fault.

Failed lower heating element (electric)

Electric heaters have two elements. When the lower one dies, only the top third of the tank heats. You get a few minutes of hot water, then cold. This is the #1 cause and a quick water heater repair.

Broken dip tube

The dip tube sends incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank. When it cracks, cold water mixes at the top and dilutes your hot supply immediately. Symptom: lukewarm water almost right away. Also cheap to replace.

Sediment buildup

Inches of sediment displace hot water capacity and insulate the burner from the water. A flush restores capacity in some tanks; in older ones it's permanent.

Thermostat set low or failing

Check that it's set to 120°F. If it's set right but water is lukewarm, the thermostat is faulty.

When it really is size

If your family grew or you added a soaking tub, the tank may be undersized. A larger tank or a tankless water heater that never runs out is the fix — and we'll tell you honestly which makes sense.
